Ruy Teixeira is one of America’s leading political analysts. His books include The Emerging Democratic Majority (with John Judis), The Forgotten Majority – Why the White Working Class Still Matters (with Joel Rogers) and The Disappearing American Voter.

McPherson Associates (www.mcphersonassociates.com) is a leading marketing and communications company that develops innovative communications strategies for both the internet and e-mail environments and for traditional media. McPherson Associates’ clients include major public television stations, universities, art institutions and environmental and civil rights and civil liberties groups.

The Carol / Trevelyan Strategy Group (www.ctsg.com) is a leading web and e-mail development company built around a multidisciplinary team of 60 campaign-focused people who offer a unique set of integrated products and services to progressive non-profits, labor unions, politicians, and socially responsible businesses.

The Emerging Democratic Majority website and E-newsletter has its roots in the influential 2002 book by John Judis and Ruy Teixeira. The book’s startling thesis – that demographic trends are inexorably creating the conditions for a solid and enduring democratic majority - heartened Democrats and dismayed Republicans across the nation.

About John

More important, both centrists and traditional liberals and progressives within the Democratic Party have been encouraged and inspired by the possibility that a coming era of democratic dominance can be achieved and they have begun to engage in a serious and thoughtful exchange of ideas about how it can be attained.

No one thinks that it will be easy. During a standing room only conference about the book, hosted by the Campaign for America's Future, E.J. Dionne, the leading political analysts and commentator, pointed out that this new majority was by no means guaranteed. "The majority Judis and Teixeira describe has not been formed yet" he noted "It will be a race to see who gets there first". At another conference, hosted by the Century Foundation, Katrina Vanden Heuval, editor of the Nation Magazine, raised the important question "how progressive will this emerging majority be?" From a centrist perspective, Al From, CEO of the Democratic Leadership Council raised a similar concern, noting that only with "a forward looking message" could the democrats hope to create the desired majority.

Ruy TeixeiraThese are important questions and issues. In his remarks to the Campaign for America's Future conference Ruy Teixeira presented the concept of a new synthesis between centrists and populists, one based on progressive centrism, "a fusion of centrist strategies for governing with populist ideas". But he noted that, to win in the future, the centrist and populist wings of the Democratic Party will need to engage in a systematic exchange of ideas and honest debate.

The Emerging Democratic Majority website is designed as a meeting ground and forum for this discussion. It will act as a clearinghouse for the most important articles and commentary on these issues and as a center for debate and discussion. It will seek to be an electronic strategy center for building "The Emerging Democratic Majority".
